An Exploration in Charcoal with Beth Loveland

  • Hambidge Center 105 Hambidge Court Rabun Gap, GA, 30568 United States (map)

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Charcoal has a wild side—it can be smoky and subtle, or bold and unruly. In this workshop, we’ll court all of its personalities by working with vine, compressed, and powdered charcoal across a range of surfaces. Think of it as a laboratory for mark-making: we’ll smear, erase, layer, splash, and discover how chance and control dance together on the page. Beginners are not just welcome—they’re in the perfect position to dive in without expectations. No prior art experience is needed, just a willingness to play, get a little messy, and see what unfolds. By the end, you’ll have a handful of evocative studies, some finished work, and—most importantly—new skills.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

With over sixteen years of experience as an arts educator, she has shared her passion for theater, photography, graphic design, and studio practice with countless students. You can usually find her behind the desk or in the woods at The Hambidge Center.
