WORKSHOP RETREAT: Site-Specific Earth Pigment Painting with Heather Bird Harris

  • Hambidge Center 105 Hambidge Court Rabun Gap, GA, 30568 United States (map)

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP RETREAT

Discover the colors held in rocks, soil, and clay in this three-day workshop exploring the connections between painting and place. With artist Heather Bird Harris, learn responsible approaches to gathering earth pigments and use geologic and place-based research to deepen your understanding of the materials.

In the studio, process raw earth into refined, artist-grade pigments, then combine them with watercolor and oil binders using traditional paint-making techniques. Hands-on experimentation and close observation will guide your exploration of each material’s qualities.

Using your handmade paints, create material studies and paintings on paper that explore color, composition, texture, and mark-making. Throughout the workshop, consider how materials gathered from a particular landscape can inform your creative choices.

Participants are welcome to bring small quantities of rock, soil, or clay from home to incorporate into their pigment research.
