Hambidge 2018 Art Auction

The HAMBIDGE 2018 ART AUCTION at ATLANTA DECORATIVE ARTS CENTER (ADAC) on MAY 5, 2018 was an imaginative intermingling of high design, art, food and performance and a specially curated experience crafted to engage the senses.

The auction featured 200 of the ­best emerging and established artists from across the region, and many $100 fixed price Works on Paper for budding young collectors.

Hambidge’s 2018 auction event was held at ADAC and captured by Kimberly Binns.

Chamber Cartel welcomed visitors inside with sounds and rhythms from the natural world outside. Re-imagined textiles guided people through spaces enlivened by dancers Melissa Word, Gavin Bernard and Helen Hale, while HAVEN Floral Arts wove an enchanting environmental installation. Captivating experiences waited around each corner with creative culinary surprises, a special installation by Amandine Drouet and scientific olfactory stimulations by Arianna Khmelniuk and Eddie Farr.

PRIVATE PREVIEW PARTY, 6-7PM
Sponsors, Hosts and VIP ticket holders had the first opportunity to purchase “$100 Works on Paper,” preview the auction artwork, and meet exhibiting artists. They also had all-evening access to the luxurious VIP Lounge in the Jerry Pair showroom with a special selection of complimentary food and drinks throughout the evening.

SILENT ART AUCTION, 7-10PM
Visitors found their favorite auction pieces, started their on-line bidding, then wandered into the ADAC atrium to enjoy the interwoven performances, installations and music specially curated for this delightful evening.

BIDDING ONLINE
All bidding was done on mobile devices through Paddle8, the online auction house. Bidding started April 20 and ended May 5, 10pm.

All proceeds went toward Hambidge residencies for today’s brightest talents at our 600-acre creative sanctuary in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

NIBBLES & SIPS
Bites were provided by American Cut, Anis Cafe & Bistro, PeachDish, Seven Lamps, Vino Venue, Zeal and other top Atlanta restaurants and caterers. Cash bar: Cocktails made with Atlanta Beverage Company, Old Fourth Distillery, and Four Roses liquors, Orpheus beers, and libations of all kinds

ARTIST PROJECTS

Chamber Cartel

Chamber Cartel is an ensemble of gifted musicians dedicated to finding the rare, wonderful, imaginative, and beautiful in contemporary music. They performed three pieces by John Luther Adams; Quilyaun, Strange and Sacred Noise, and songbirdsongs. Called “one of the most original musical thinkers of the new century,” by the New Yorker, Pulitzer Prize-winning Adams is a composer whose life and work are deeply rooted in the natural world. Each immersive piece imparted the elemental force of Adams’ music to auction attendees.

Dance Performance
Drawing inspiration from the lush and verdant landscape of Hambidge, and the curiously immaculate environs of ADAC’s design showrooms, Gavin Bernard, Melissa Word and Helen Hale offered a movement meditation at the intersection of the natural and the domestic. Coupled with Hale’s fantasy floralscapes, the trio of movers and spacemakers constructed ephemeral and ever-shifting scenes, studying the effort of specialness and the poise of wild things.

HAVEN used unexpected combinations of flowers and natural materials to honor, celebrate, and bedeck our lives together, and invited us to delight anew in the beauty, drama and romance of our wild earth and our participation its remarkable ecosystems.

Amandine Drouet

Mixed media artist, Amandine Drouet, created a sculptural installation for the event using fabric donated by Jerry Pair.

HAYA

Arianna Khmelniuk and Eddie Farr created a floating installation which explored the senses using smells, touch, and audio. The sensory stimuli were a set of codes that symbolize fertility and biodiversity. The installation, floating in space, created an unusual corridor for visitors, transferring them to the imaginary Middle East through sound, codes, and abstract smell.

Creative Cakes
Led by Angie Mosier, distinguished chefs and artists decorated cakes (or performing their interpretation of cake decoration) throughout the evening. Attendees were encouraged to try their decorative hand on cupcakes as well. These edible works of art were available for purchase or went home with lucky cake walk winners.
