PERFORMANCE & INSTALLATION PROJECTS

BlackCatTips
What the heck is a BlackCatTips? A BlackCatTips is a painter and muralist. A BlackCatTips is a poet and a thinker— a teller of tales. A BlackCatTips is Kyle Brooks, a streetfolk artist from way down in the American South. In addition to his studio and mural work, Brooks creates street poems and whimsical roadside art installations. With his brush, bright colors and a few found materials, he paints the world happy.

BlackCatTips has created a happy red carpet backdrop for the event so you can snap and share photos with your friends.

Eley
Stephanie Eley who simply goes by her last name Eley, is a local commercial and conceptual photographer who specializes in portraiture. She has a Masters degree from Savannah College of Art and Design and is currently on the Board of Directors for Atlanta Celebrates Photography (ACP). A staple of her work is rooted in the content created for humanity by bringing awareness to socio-political issues within our community. Her eye is drawn to dramatic lighting that emphasizes both the subject and their environment, allowing her to rejuvenate the traditional take on portraiture. During the Hambidge Auction, Eley will be using this approach with our guests, photographing them in ever-changing compositions to create a series of photographs which afterward will be exhibited online at the Hambidge website as part of Atlanta Celebrates Photography.

Fly on a Wall
Fly on the Wall is an idea house that presents and supports innovative performance. Their work thrives on artists of all backgrounds coming together to create art that lives at the junction of wit, risk, and meaningful experiences. Fly on a Wall shifts audiences perspectives by creating an interface of artistic mediums that is guided by a strong theatrical sensibility and an extensive movement vocabulary. Since their inception in 2014 Fly on a Wall has created a body of work which includes multimedia performance, installation, and dance for film.

For the Hambidge Auction, Fly on a Wall presents Prism III and Nymph.

In Prism III, a collaboration with OkCello, Fly on a Wall artists Nicole Johnson, Nathan Griswold, Sean Ngueyn-Hilton, and Jimmy Joyner perform on an unsteady platform suspended by harp strings, showinging bodies in communication via unstable and constantly shifting frequencies. The work looks at relationships that are constantly navigating forces, both physical and unseen. It is simultaneously a performance and a practice of negotiating bodies, gravity, and uncertainty in an ever changing environment.

Nicholas Goodly’s Nymph is a series of gestures and short phrases set the entrance of The Works. Based on the elemental mythological beings, three dancers will play with the ideas of traditional masculine and feminine signifiers and morph them into new iconographic shapes and dynamic movement with communal sensibility and thoughtfulness.

Julia Hill
Julia Hill is an Atlanta based sculptor and Hambidge Fellow with a strong interest in salvaged materials and the natural world. Her work incorporates many genres, including performance, installation, puppetry, metal fabrication, carpentry, ceramics, drawing and painting. Her large-scale puppets have been performed at The High Museum, The World of Coca-Cola, The Atlanta Zoo, The Hambidge Center, The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and beyond. Julia enjoys working collaboratively and facilitating large-scale creative visions with other artists and organizations, as well as hosting skill share sessions and leading a wide variety of creative hands-on workshops for all ages. For the Hambidge Auction, Julia and a team of friends will present an interactive forest made of cardboard and detritus. Otherworldly masks inspired by the forest will be for sale within the woods.

LXXX YOU
LXXX YOU is a rotating group of artists and friends founded by Mike Stasny and George Long. Prompted by party motifs and parodying human life, LXXX YOU’s performance and installation work lampoon’s social experiences by inviting viewers into a surreal world. For this year’s Hambidge auction LXXX YOU requests the pleasure of your company in FAR•RA•GO - a giant inflatable serving as both a projection screen and room presenting unearthly environments. This collection of escapist realities is complimented by hyper-real costumed DJ’s with random characters and alternate identities.

OkCello
OkCello’s music integrates cello, live-sound-looping and improvisation on original compositions, which collide classical with jazz, EDM, reggae and funk. His songs are deeply emotive and narrative, complementing one another like short stories within a collection. Though dealing with grave matters, Resolve is an uplifting album which builds on the musical rebirth that began with OkCello’s debut album, 2015’s Liminal, which established him as a pioneer of electronic and experimental string music in the United States.

Amanda Grae Platner
Amanda Grae Platner is an Atlanta-based artist with a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Her work explores discipline, the act of continuing to persevere amidst challenge. Her practice focuses on painting and endurance-related performance. For the Hambidge Auction, Amanda will be creating an interactive painting performance. As she works through physical restraint, you’re invited to be part of the painting process.

Carl Rainey
A self-taught artist, Carl Rainey began his education with engineering graphics classes, but quickly discovering a love of making art. Throughout most of his working life, he maintained two identities - that of an artist and of an engineer. Now in retirement, Carl focuses on his artwork, but his engineer training has made a lasting and valuable impact. His Nebula Series is about looking for meaning and beauty in iconographic moving shapes and a variety of changing color patterns over time. The iconography comes from an interest in science and astronomy, and the influence of images of Mayan, Inca, American Indian, and Middle Eastern civilizations that Carl encountered during childhood.
