Using a limited palette, you will be introduced to plein air painting techniques that will help you render realistic landscapes full of atmosphere and light.
I will begin the workshop with an overview and demonstration of the essentials of plein air painting using the alla prima method. Topics discussed will include composition, light, atmospheric and linear perspective, the importance of value; and an in-depth discussion of color: identifying, mixing and modifying it in order to bring our work to life.
After the demonstration, we’ll paint together. We will approach each new painting opportunity by building on the fundamentals and adding in whatever new set of variables the location and weather bring: changes in the light, clouds and sky painting, “interior” landscapes and village scenes.
Each day there will be two painting opportunities (morning and afternoon), that will allow us to capture at least the basic essence of each site in one sitting.
"When we paint the landscape we are completely immersed in our subject and, for better or worse, interacting with it on all kinds of levels: visual, auditory, sensory. Being present with what we see, hear, and feel, and responding to all the shifts and changes that naturally occur without getting swept away by them, creates an alchemy through which we inevitably become a part of the landscape—it comes with us when we go and a part of us remains behind, woven into it." ~Melinda Borysevicz
Instructor: Melinda Borysevicz is an Italian-American figurative artist currently living and working in rural southern Italy. After participating for many years in Savannah Georgia’s vibrant creative scene, she travelled to a village not too far from her ancestral home in southern Italy. “A couple months away” has turned into several years after Borysevicz simple stayed to continue to paint. Her narrative portrait and figure paintings spring directly from her personal experience of having re-discovered her ancestral home.
Borysevicz received a BFA in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design (Savannah, GA) magna cum laude. She furthered her skills working with painters Bo Bartlett, Joe Paquet, Jeff Hein, and Kerry Dunn. Her work was selected for Manifest Gallery’s International Painting Annual as well as for Figurativas 19 at the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, where she has previously exhibited. She has also exhibited at the Museo Pablo Sarrano in Zaragosa Spain, the RJD Gallery in New York, Abend Gallery in Colorado, and numerous locations in Georgia, Virginia, Ohio, Texas, and Italy. She teaches painting workshops on the portrait, the clothed figure, and the landscape en plein air.
Experience Level: While all levels are welcome, some previous painting and drawing experience is recommended.
